So pregnancy means a total surrender of autonomy?

On December 23, 2010, Shuai, a 34-year-old pregnant woman who was suffering from a major depressive disorder, attempted to take her own life. Friends found her in time and persuaded her to get help. Six days later, Shuai underwent cesarean surgery and delivered a premature newborn girl who, tragically, died four days later.
On March 14, 2011, Shuai was arrested, jailed, and charged with murder and attempted feticide.
Don't get pregnant, ladies! It means that every risk you might take becomes a criminal offense! I always thought it was a joke to criminalize suicide, too, but here's a case where they're actually prosecuting a woman for the crime.
Next up: every time you kick a man in the balls, you are a mass-murderer.

Oh my god! I was just listening to the radio today about the criminalization of mental illness. Don't these people have brains? What good does it do to prosecute someone instead of getting them treatment? Which is cheaper than jail! When a person is suicidally depressed, they're not thinking straight! Mean-spirited morons!

Beginning to sound like pregnant women need to bring a lawyer along on doctor visits

If the christianists had their way, having a set of XY chromosomes would mean a total surrender of autonomy.

Cross-posted from Pharyngula.

I like where the US is going: eventually, the population will be entirely bifurcated: all USAnians will be either prisoners or prison employees.

I call dibs on the Hawaiian islands that aren't a penal colony!

When I watched Law & Order, I used to wonder where they got their prosecutors from. Now I know the interviews go like this:

Interviewer: "Says on your...what is this supposed to be exactly? A resume? A CV?"
Candidate: "It's my Angry Birds high score."
I: "Okay. Anyways, did you even attend law school?"
C: "I was deprived of oxygen for several hours during birth."
I: "Fine. Let's have a few test questions. First off, you have two men accused of theft: the first is a black man accused of stealing a watch and the other a banker accused of bilking millions out of their pensions."
C: "Death for the black man, and How sorry did you say the banker was? I'm sure he didn't mean any harm."
I: "Excellent. Next question: two people, two attempted murders. Both were accidental. The first shot a "friend" in the face while hunting, the second was a severely depressed pregnant woman who survived a suicide attempt; her baby, sadly, did not."
C: "Waitaminnit: somebody, obviously taking Jesus' example of compassion to bold new heights, knocks this woman up, and the ungrateful bitch gets depressed about it?"
I: "Welcome aboard!"

(OK lets try this again (I have trouble with choices that are not explained until they are already made maybe))

What is it with the conservative mind why is it always the stick over the carrot.
They seem to be motivated by resentment primarily it is not just this story about a woman lost in depression and desperation it is all of their approach to the world and life.

from the ACLU art."Moreover, what does it say about our society — about our obsession with incarceration and using the criminal justice system to treat public health issues"
poor wage jobs over unemployment insurance, no universal healthcare but increases in military spending employers over collective bargaining always the rich and powerful over the "common people" certainty over doubt, belief over evidence
never a search for understanding.
The result is the only way to get help for a very sick women is through the prison system and that only because of law suits forcing the issue otherwise all prisons would be just chain gang forced labor or dungeons.

At first, I figured this must have happened somewhere the Taliban ruled! Maybe I was right.

This was to be expected, with all of the new laws being passed on the state level that declare a fetus to be a person. I don't particularly care about personhood. I'm concerned with citizenship. When are the Religious Righties going to start issuing passports to fetuses?

"Mean spirited" is what I keep thinking about these, these would be despots,Monado.

At the moment of conception, a woman becomes nothing more than a vessel, doncha know. Possibly to another future vessel. So, before they charge her with murder, they need to verify that the fetus would have been a male. Otherwise, the most she could be charged with is vandalism.

Ok, bloggerspot.whatever typesetting is sort of fubar, I guess can live with that. But you really should try and teach it to quote in Comic Sans under Mr. Gumby supervision, or I can't take it seriously.

See, I'm so thrown off course I'm posting in the wrong topic. Sorry for that.

Me too. I'm glad I'm nearing the end of my years. I don't want to see what the US is becoming.

That post was supposed to lead off with a quote from Crazy. I thought it was about some Middle-Eastern country.

PZ, your picture needs to be on the left side, the unused side, of this forum.

More religious madness: U.S. Fundamentalist Terry Jones burns another Koran, so twenty U.N. workers are killed in Afghanistan by way of retaliation.

Made me think of an April's Fool article I just read about how sperm now feel pain! The Pro-lifers would be all up in arms over that one.

Testing comments, and wanted to give a heads up (maybe, it is a day old) about a post on "P G Myers" (http://rjosephhoffmann.wordpress.com/2011/04/01/arrest-terry-jones-the-abuses-of-blasphemy/).

Considering he really (still) has no clue about why we do what we do, it's pathetic. Figured I'd relay it on the most recent post.

What if you were just having a self defense then suddenly you kick the balls of a man, are you still be accused as a mass-murderer? She must acclaim that punishment that was really meant for her.
